Reliability

Natural gas is there when you need it most

  • Illinois’ electric infrastructure is inadequate to move to an electric-only energy source
the state doesn’t have adequate system capacity for the amount of increased energy needed

  • Only 1 in 650 customers are expected to experience a planned or unplanned natural gas outage in any given year

  • Natural gas is delivered to customers through a safe efficient and reliable 2.7 million mile underground pipeline system

Enviornment

Natural gas has a proven track record of cutting emissions

  • Climate change is a defining challenge across the globe, and natural gas, natural gas utilities, and the delivery infrastructure are essential to meeting our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.

  • Natural gas utilities saved 1.7 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency programs in 2020

Appliances

The impact to you and your home

  • A gas stove is more environmentally friendly in terms of total energy consumption if properly ventilated

  • Gas stoves may be more expensive to install, although less expensive to run compared to electric stoves

  • Gas stoves will cost you less than half as much to operate compared to an electric stove

Affordability

American families use natural gas because it is affordable

  • Households that use natural gas for heating, cooking, and clothes drying save an average of 1,132 per year compared to those using electricity for those applications

  • The low cost of natural gas has saved families a total of $125 billion over 10 years

  • Commercial and industrial customers using natural gas saved more than half a trillion dollars over the past decade

Impact of the Ban

Immediate impacts to all Illinois households

  • Passage of a natural gas or propane ban will immediately affect all energy users, resulting in higher costs and service challenges across the systems

  • Eliminating natural gas could lead to increased coal use, harming public health and worsening climate change, while expensive renewables could result in higher electricity bills and a less reliable power grid
